Newberry County Emergency Medical Services is the primary 911 provider for the County of Newberry. NCEMS serves a population of over 34,000 in a mostly rural county of 630 square miles. NCEMS had humble beginnings in the mid 1960’s when the ambulances were moved out of the funeral home over to Newberry County Memorial Hospital. The formal EMS entity was established in 1976 with two ambulances and a staff of eight. The service was self-dispatched and based at Newberry County Memorial Hospital.

Today NCEMS has a fleet of eight ALS ambulances, three quick response vehicles (QRVs) and a staff of over forty employees based at five stations throughout the county.

NCEMS is a division of Newberry County Memorial Hospital and is governed by its Board of Directors and an appointed EMS Director. Additionally, the management team consists of a Major and a Captain of Operations as well as four individual shift Lieutenants. Medical Direction is provided by the Chief NCMH Emergency Services Physician.

The department is structured into several distinctive shift assignments. Currently NCEMS operates three of its ALS ambulances 24 hours each day. Two of those are staffed with a rotation of sixteen employees who work 24 hours on / 72 hours off shifts. The remaining 24 hour ambulance is staffed by a combination of shifts. 4 employees work the 12 hour night shifts. Another 4 employees work 12 hour day shifts on a rotating basis which allows NCEMS to staff one additional ambulance 12 hours per day. NCEMS staffs two QRVs for 8 hours on Monday through Friday.

NCEMS also provides a non-emergent transport division for its citizens. The service is available 12 hours per day / 7 days per week. The transport division also works with their clients should the need arise to schedule a transport outside the hours of operation. Every attempt is made to accommodate the ambulance service needs of Newberry County. To find out more information or to schedule a transport please call (803) 924-8126 or (803) 405-0063.
